The corona virus vaccine for children in India may be available next month. Vaccine trials are currently going on between the ages of 2 to 18 years. Dr Priya Abraham, Director, Indian Council of Medical Research-National Institute of Virology (ICMR-NIV) answered questions from The Times of India on children's vaccines. He said that by September the first vaccine could be available for children. Apart from this, many other vaccines are also in the pipeline.

When will the first vaccine for children come?

Abraham said that trials of Covaxin are going on in children. He hoped that the results will come soon which will then have to be placed before the regulators. Dr Abraham said that in September or soon after, a vaccine may be available for children.

The trial of Zydus Cadila's vaccine is also going on in children. This will be the first vaccine based on DNA. In addition, mRNA vaccines from Genoa Biopharmaceuticals, biological e-vaccines, Novavax from Serum Institute of India and intranasal vaccines from Bharat Biotech are also being developed

Will any vaccine work on the Delta Plus variant?

According to Dr. Abraham, the chances of spreading delta-plus variants are less as compared to delta. Delta spans over 130 countries. He said, 'We have done studies on antibodies made in people vaccinated at NIV and checked against this variant. We found that the efficacy of antibodies against Delta is reduced by two to three times. Nevertheless, the vaccine gives protection against the variants.

Will we need a booster dose?

Dr Abraham said that studies are going on if there is a need for a booster dose. At least seven different vaccines have been tried for booster doses. Now the WHO (World Health Organization) has banned it until there is a vaccination in more countries.

Studying to mix and match the vaccine?

There were some cases where two different vaccine doses were accidentally administered. Dr Abraham said that we tested those samples at NIV and found that the patients were safe. No adverse effect was seen in any.
